NutrInsight • Satiety: News Insights
Conclusion
Satiety, fullness, hunger, cravings, and reward are useful psychological constructs whose neural representations begin to be understood, thanks to the recent development of many techniques allowing brain activity to be monitored at the time of food stimulation. Neuroimaging studies in human subjects have revealed some of the complex interactions between metabolic, cognitive, and emotional influences that result in the onset or the inhibition of eating.
• Satiety, fullness, hunger, craving, etc. are “heuristically” and “operationally” useful psychological constructs.
• However, the neural representations of these constructs are still not well understood and defined.
• Neuroimaging studies in human subjects are helpful in defining the complex interactions between metabolic, cognitive, and emotional drives that result in either eating or not eating (satiety).
• With increasing technological knowhow, there is no limit to exciting future experiments figuring out the role of the brain in satiety, appetite, and nutrition in general.
